A nerve-wracking account of a series of tragic events (Fragmented Childhood) that befell an innocent girl. From a very young age, she inexplicably got into situations that would turn out to be intensely traumatizing for her. A wrong touch from a teacher pretending to punish her, outright molestation from a janitor after school, dishonest married men ‘making a move’ on her in college while pretending to be single and the list goes on. Every event would only leave her doubting her own judgement and character, eventually destroying every bit of self-esteem in her. It is simply mind-boggling to see how manipulative one can become to satisfy their carnal needs while causing irreversible emotional and physical damage to the other. Add to this a college roommate’s suicide and constant bullying in the classroom, one can only imagine the isolation she faced. Call it destiny or a redemption of her fragmented childhood, she manages to find a coping mechanism for herself in a book on the power of positive thoughts and would later revisit few paragraphs of the book every time she felt low. Calling these events ‘tragic’ would hide the bigger problem looming over our society which is the education of men about the concept of consent and respect towards women. Not only is such education important to prevent men from causing mental and physical trauma to those around them, but also to sensitize the society enough to make girls feel safe to open up to their close relatives and friends about such events. At the end of the book, she makes a speedy recovery, which begs the reader to think: “even if you are not ready for the day, it cannot always be night”.
